Norma’s Cafe donated a $12,537.45 check to Big Brothers Big Sisters Greater Dallas from its 68th birthday fundraiser on June 26.
All proceeds from the sales of its chicken fried steak and birthday cake pie that day went to BBBS Greater Dallas to help support its mission of positively impacting the lives of children in the Dallas community.
On June 26, the restaurant offered its famous chicken fried steak and limited-edition birthday cake pie for the 1950s price of $1.85 each ($2 with tax). The community came out to support Norma’s which sold 5,792 chicken fried steak plates and 985 pieces of birthday cake pie that day.
Raising such a significant amount for the organization meant a lot to Norma’s cafe owner, Ed Murph, who is especially close to the organization.
Murph was a Little in the 1950s to World War II veteran Mr. Bill Barnett. He was so positively impacted by the Oak Cliff native that in the 1980s, Murph too served as a Big for several in the program, one of which even served as his best man at his wedding.
“Wonderful memories and lifelong friends were made in that experience,” Murph said. “We are so proud to partner with such a terrific organization.”
Jenny Harper, President of Big Brothers Big Sisters Greater Dallas, said the organization was delighted to work with the long-time Dallas eatery.
“Norma’s and BBBS share the values of serving the community and giving back,” Harper said. “We are humbled to partner with a BBBS Alumni and getting to work with such a beloved Dallas establishment.”
