Through Senate Bill 1, the 89th Legislature in Austin allocated $13 million for the new program to focus on the sterilization of dogs and cats, which could greatly support the Bishop Arts District when it comes to the feral cat colonies of the neighborhood.

However, on Wednesday, September 3, the city manager was asked to identify an alternative funding source that could be used to fund expansion of spay/neuter services, microchipping and vaccination efforts at Dallas Animal Services (DAS) while awaiting this new funding.

According to an email from Anthony Zuniga, animal services marketing coordinator for DAS, the organization is planning to apply for additional funds provided by SB1. However, “no additional information has been provided by TXSNP/Texas DSHS” at this time for how to do so.

In August, DAS held its 11th annual Clear The Shelters campaign, with the fundraising initiative continuing until Monday.
