On Wednesday, the Dallas City Council will discuss the future of the site of the former University General Hospital in Oak Cliff.

The building, located at 2929 S. Hampton, has room for approximately 110 people and has been owned by the city since 2022 when it was purchased for $6.5 million.

The Housing and Homeless Solutions committee previously asked city staff in February to come up with a “request for interest” document, or “RFI” to help find out if a developer might have an alternative plan for the site.

The plan was initially to develop the former hospital into permanent supportive housing for homeless individuals on the 12-acre property. For tomorrow’s agenda, the council will deliberate the purchase, exchange, lease or value of the property in closed session because “deliberation in an open meeting would have a detrimental effect on the position of the governmental body in negotiations with a third person.”

Concerns from the community about the site use change have stemmed from a “lack of transparency” for neighborhood stakeholders who have questioned the location of the housing site in proximity to Brashear Elementary, the Hampton-Illinois Branch Library and Kiest Park.
