Over a week since the vigil, the candles for the West Davis Street hit-and-run victim stay lit.
On the night of Oct. 12, Dallas Police responded to the 400 block of W Davis Street in the Bishop Arts District.
There, Dallas Fire Rescue was performing CPR on 29-year-old Jose Benitez, a private security officer, after the driver of a speeding white SUV hit him as he crossed the street. Benitez died on scene.
The vehicle crashed with severe front damage, along with catching fire before the driver fled the scene.
According to police, the alleged driver John Alvarez was arrested north of the scene with the charges of collision involving damage to vehicle, a collision involving death and intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle.
