Owner and CEO of the Pan African Connection Bookstore and Resource Center Akwete Tyehimba received the Sutton E. Griggs Lifetime Achievement Award in Literature on Friday, Nov. 7.
Griggs, a prolific writer, publisher, orator and social activist, was born in Chatfield, Texas in 1872. He later earned degrees from Bishop College and Richmond Theological Seminary.
Throughout his life he authored over 33 books with five novels tackling themes of nationalism, miscegenation, colorism, racial injustice, assimilation and self-image. He went on to found the Orion Publishing Company in Nashville in 1901 to amplify Black voices and ideas. He was among the few Southern Black members of the Niagara Movement and a forerunner to the NAACP.
Created in 2017, the award is presented to individuals whose lives embody the qualities and actions of Griggs: strong commitment to social justice and a body of work focusing on African American life and culture.
Tyehimba was presented the award for her lifelong advocacy in support of culture, education and community empowerment. She has transformed lives and strengthened cultural legacy in Dallas through the Pan African Connection Bookstore and Resource Center.
She continues to dedicate her life to uplifting others and preserving African heritage for future generations with the community hub providing workshops, classes and meetings that focus on cooking, business development, health and wellness.
The award reception kicked off the programming for the 21st annual Tulisoma South Dallas Book Fair on Saturday, Nov. 8. Hosted at the African American Museum in Fair Park, the family-friendly fair features readings and book signings from over 35 African American authors. Additionally, workshops, panel discussions, story times and children’s activities were available throughout the day.
“At the African American Museum, we are committed to preserving and sharing the richness of African American culture and history,” said Lisa Brown Ross, president and CEO of the African American Museum, Dallas. “Tulisoma is one of our signature community events that brings those values to life – promoting literacy, elevating Black voices, and inspiring future generations of readers, writers and leaders – all in a way that is engaging and entertaining for the whole community.”
