Several new restaurants on tap for Oak Cliff

The most exciting, of course, is the one that involves donuts. Garland-based Southern Maid donuts leased a building on West Davis in the triangle between Polk, Tyler and King’s Highway. It’s the blue-and-yellow building that used to be a tire shop, and it’s already under construction.

Chef David Uyger has leased a restaurant space on Eighth Street, adjacent to Dude, Sweet Chocolate in the Bishop Arts District. According to this DMN blog, the Italian restaurant will focus on using local ingredients. Uyger was the chef at Lola, the mega pricey restaurant, now closed, in the Crescent Court.

And this one is long overdue: Monica Greene of Monica’s Aca y Alla and several other restaurants past and present, says she wants to open a new restaurant in Oak Cliff called Distrito. She hasn’t leased anything so far, but we can’t wait to find out what she has in store with Distrito. Monica’s is an every day lunch and happy-hour spot now, but I remember when it was one of the hottest places in town. We learned to salsa dance there in the 90s. Maybe we’ll learn a new dance at Distrito.

Southern maid donuts in 937 w. davis now offer wi-fi for all our customers. thank you for your support and have a great day.

  • Reenie

Great! It’s a drive-thru donut shop just off Davis on my way to work. They offer lunch items, too, not just donut/breakfast fare.

A good donut, now and then, is one of the rewards for the meals of steamed fish, broccoli and brown rice. Life is about the balance. And I’ll take a donut shop over a tire shop any day!

You have very strong convictions, gabba_hey. 😉

Looks like Vera’s will finally get some competition (I’ve been boycotting them since they never have cinnamon rolls anymore).

  • Woodlawn

It will be hard to compete with Lone Star Donuts, even if they are a mile apart.

Can’t wait to see what Monica comes up with, though!

    Donuts in 2010!

A donut shop? Really? Isn’t this 2010? A reasonably priced vegetarian or “healthy” alternative should would have been nice instead.

    La La La La Lola!

  • Rachel Stone

Thanks for calling that out. I never went there, obviously.

Lola was in a house on Maple, not in Crescent Court. His prices were also right on for the quality of food and atmosphere.
