The Island Spot, a Jamaican restaurant new to Jefferson Tower, threw a grand opening party Wednesday.

Owner Richard Thomas grew up in Jamaica and came to the United States for college. He earned an MBA from the Ohio State University before making the leap into the restaurant business several years ago. He says he was inspired by a Jamaican restaurant, where he found good food but a poor atmosphere and terrible service.

He says he was embarrassed the place was representing Jamaica, so he decided to do it better himself.

He and his mother, “Mama Joyce”, opened the Island Spot in Carrolton in 2010.

At the grand opening, we tasted meat pies, bread pudding and some stiff cocktails — rum punch, mandarin cocktail and sangria made with ginger beer.

The restaurant is open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday.
