Advocate slideshow: Oak Cliff Mardi Gras 2012

We ate pie and crawfish. We drank sparkling wine and beer. We ran 3.1 miles. We threw and caught beads and candy. We danced, we laughed, we ate some more pie. Oak Cliff Mardi Gras 2012 came and went this weekend.

Winnetka Heights won best float in the parade for their 70s disco theme. The judges — Roy Appleton of the Dallas Morning News, Joanna England of Oak Cliff People and I — scored a tie between the Winnetka Heights float and last year’s winner, Krewe La Rive Gauche. In the end, a coin toss decided it. There were many terrific floats, and it’s impressive that neighbors put in so much time and work on them.

The Mini Coopers were cute. I tried to capture as much of the parade as possible, but there are a lot of floats/groups that are not in these pictures. I don’t have anything against small British automobiles. 🙂

You didn’t even mention or picture any of the MINI Coopers. There were 19 MINI Coopers, mostly from the Oak Cliff area. We worked really hard on the “costumes” for our cars and made sure we had plenty of beads to throw this year. And we are looking forward to coming back next year. We hope you see fit to include us in your reporting of the event next year. We had a lot of fun and made a lot of people smile.

The Winnetka Height float was my favorite! Maybe next year we can have a Sunset Hills Float.

Great job by Go Oak Cliff and all the volunteers that put together such a terrific event.  The entire weekend reinforces why it is so great to live in Oak Cliff.  We knew our float, music, costumes, fog machine, roller skaters, and disco dance would have to come together to compete with La Rive Gauche and all the other impressive floats we saw on the route.  The parade will only get better and better!  See you next year!

    Thanks Judges!
