While neighbor Jenni Stolarski’s ReTree Oak Cliff is busy planting 4,000 trees in our neighborhood, there is another way to score a free tree.

Oncor has teamed up with arborday.org to provide as many as three free trees to electricity customers. The website offers four varieties of trees: Mexican plum, Mexican oak, bur oak and rough leaf dogwood. It then suggests where to plant the tree for the best energy savings.

I tried it out, choosing a dogwood and virtually planting the tree in a zone the website suggested. It calculated that the tree would help save about $90 over 20 years.

Arborday.org will deliver your tree for free, but you have to dig the hole and plant it. The customer must also agree not to plant the tree where it could interfere with Oncor power lines and to basically take good care of the tree.
