Millan is one of six North Texas students who will appear on KERA’s “Speak Out: An American Graduate Special,” which premieres at 7 p.m. tonight, Aug. 28.

Krys Boyd of “Think” hosts the show, which talks with students who have overcome the odds to graduate and go to college. That idea is similar to our annual graduation cover story about neighborhood kids. The students in KERA’s show have faced obstacles including pregnancy, drug abuse, parental absence, health issues and financial difficulties.

After the show airs on TV, it will be available at kera.org/graduate.

A second installment of “Speak Out,” scheduled for November, will focus on teachers.
