Go to happy hour, spread literacy

An ESL class at Hampton-Illinois Library

The Oak Cliff Foundation is raising awareness by raising a glass. The foundation hosts a happy hour at the Texas Theatre from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, for an ESL family literacy program in Oak Cliff.

State and local cutbacks have resulted in fewer English as a second language programs in libraries and schools, so the University of North Texas at Dallas created a new English class, one for whole families, at the Hampton-Illinois Library. The curriculum is provided by UNT-Dallas, and volunteers from that campus teach the classes every Saturday.

Instructors and students from the class will attend the happy hour to explain the program and show Oak Cliff neighbors how they can get involved.
