The City Council’s Trinity River Project Committee voted to move forward the suggestion to nameĀ it the Ronald Kirk Pedestrian Bridge.

Kirk served as mayor from 1995-2002 and was the first African American mayor Dallas. He served as U.S. Trade Representative under President Barack Obama from 2009-2013.

The committee offered little discussion of the proposal before voting to send it to the full City Council. Committee chairman Lee Kleinman declined to allow City Councilman Phil Kingston comment on the proposal, citing that Kingston is not on the committee.

Kingston told the Dallas Morning News he had intended to suggest naming some other street for Kirk, such as Victory Boulevard.
