Future uncertain for Lucky Dog Books

Lucky Dog Books, the chain of three independent used book stores, could be shrinking.

The location on Garland Road is closing after owner John Tilton sold the building. Tilton says he would like to reopen somewhere in East Dallas, but he would need a loan of $4,000-$5,000 to do it.

Tilton opened his first store, Paperbacks Plus, in Lakewood in the mid-1970s. He says he is open to selling the East Dallas store or all three stores. The location on Jefferson Boulevard isn’t in immediate danger of closing, Tilton says. But its sales aren’t enough to pay the rent; the Oak Cliff store has been subsidized by sales in East Dallas and Mesquite, he says.
