Increased cases of deadly dog virus that travels through the air

Dallas Animal Services is reporting an increase in cases of distemper among raccoons in Oak Cliff.

Distemper, which can be spread through the air and shared food, cannot be contracted by humans or cats, but the virus is deadly to dogs. Especially at risk are unvaccinated dogs, and there is no cure.

Animal services reports an uptick in cases of raccoons carrying distemper in zip codes 75208 and 75211. Symptoms include lethargy, disorientation, vomiting, seizures, erratic behavior and aggression.

Avoid attracting raccoons by making sure trash cans are closed and removing pet foot and water bowls from outside.
