West won 54.5 percent of the vote, receiving 3,250 votes. Competitor Giovanni Valderas received 2,067 votes. Sylvana Alonzo received 535 votes, and Jeremy Boss won 107 votes.

The Dallas Morning News analyzed it like this: “Thanks to the strong support from north Oak Cliff’s more affluent communities such as Kessler Park, criminal defense attorney Chad West was the outright winner…” to replace outgoing City Councilman Scott Griggs.

“We can’t thank everyone enough for the constant support, enthusiasm and encouragement through this campaign,” the West campaign wrote on Facebook.

Griggs will face Texas state Rep. Eric Johnson in a runoff June 8, since none of the nine candidates received more than 50 percent of the vote. Johnson received 20 percent of the vote, with 16,374. And Griggs won 18 percent of the vote with 14,901. Albert Black, who lives in Oak Cliff, received 4,205 votes.
