Van Johnson, who organizes the Oak Cliff Gardeners Facebook group, put out the call and received volunteers and donations to knock out the project in a day.

Legacy Founders Cottage, a hospice care center for patients in the critical stages of AIDS, gave him a $150 budget, which had been donated in home-improvement store gift carts. Neighbors donated another $210. Members of the gardening group also donated flats of plants and plants they dug up from their own gardens, Johnson says. One guy sent his landscaper over to edge and clean up the patio before work began.

The Oak Cliff Gardeners installed plants and painted two murals, all in one day.
