Three students from Oak Cliff high schools won the top college scholarships from the Dallas Housing Authority.

Venisha Shute Davis, who graduated from Kathlyn Joy Gilliam Collegiate Academy, won the Chairman’s scholarship award, and she will attend the University of Texas at Dallas.

Two students won the Troy Broussard Leadership Award: Joshua Jernigan, from the School of Business and Management at Townview, and Lola Breanna Steward-Morris, from the School of Education and Social Services at Townview. Jernigan will attend the University of North Texas, and Steward-Morris will attend Sam Houston State University.

All 25 scholarship recipients are DHA affordable housing residents from schools throughout the DHA service area: Dallas, Rockwall, Collin, Tarrant, Ellis, Kaufman and Denton counties.

DHA has awarded $1.5 million in scholarships to graduating high school seniors and returning college students who reside in affordable housing over the past 22 years through their education foundation, Opportunity Rising. The agency’s data shows that 71% of DHA scholarship recipients were first-generation college students, and 76% were employed and not receiving government assistance.
