UT Southwestern announced today plans to convert the old Sears store at Red Bird Mall to an outpatient medical center.

Southwestern Medical Center at Red Bird is expected to open in 2021, offering “a range of care with an emphasis on specialty services.”

“We wanted to bring the care we offer closer to home, in this instance to the south side of our city,” UT Southwestern executive vice president Dr. John Warner stated in a media release. “We look forward to meeting with community members in the upcoming weeks and months to learn how we can best complement and collaborate with existing and future medical providers in the area to help improve health outcomes in these communities.”

Red Bird’s owner Peter Brodsky received $22 million from the city of Dallas for his plan to renovate the mall, which was built in 1974, as a community with residences, shopping, restaurants, offices, all centered on a park.
