“Why is your mom so batshit crazy?”
We’re not saying that’s anyone’s life right now, but it’s a whole vibe with Edie Brickell and New Bohemians on the track.
Guitarist Kenny Withrow, who lives in Oak Cliff, uploaded this outtake from their recording session for “Rocket.” That’s the album they recorded when they reunited for their La Rondalla benefit concerts at the Kessler in 2017.
Edie Brickell grew up in our neighborhood, the daughter of a professional bowler, Eddie Brickell, and wife, Larry. Edie and her New Bohemians bandmates all graduated from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. She started singing with the band as a teenager, and they had a hit song, “What I Am,” in 1988.
As a bona fide recluse and anxious person, I often find strength and solace in American singer/songwriters, women especially. Here’s a good one in that vein, “Sun’s Gonna Shine,” from “Bright Star,” the Broadway musical Brickell wrote with Steve Martin.
