White worked her way up from volunteer to national manager of Live Free, a nonprofit with the goal of ending mass incarceration in the United States.

She recently appeared as an expert on live national television during a discussion of COVID-19 in prisons and jails.

She notes on MSNBC that healthcare is not free to people who are incarcerated. Prisoners are usually charged or held accountable for copays and other costs associated with medical care.

Start the video below at the 3:40 mark to hear White’s answer to what the nation should be doing for incarcerated people to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“We don’t want to see mass deaths with mass incarceration,” she says.

She offers solutions to greater systemic problems and calls on governors and local leaders to take “bold, decisive and swift action,” including protections to keep people out of jail who don’t need to be there, release prisoners who aren’t a threat and protect those remaining behind bars with cleaning products and protocols.
