More than 17,000 homes in Oak Cliff ZIP codes were without power Monday morning after a severe winter storm dumped inches of snow on Dallas, with temperatures reaching the single digits.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas initiated the outages at 1:25 a.m. Monday because of record-breaking electric demand as people try to keep their homes warm. The outages are expected to last throughout Monday and until the “weather emergency ends,” according to a news release.

Rotating outages are controlled, temporary interruptions of electrical service that rotate through different parts of the electric grid. They usually last 15-45 minutes, but many neighbors reported outages lasting much longer.

Many of the estimated restoration times for our neighborhood are currently unknown.

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson said on Twitter this morning: “We know as much as you do about the status of the grid and power outages at this point. Will update when we know more. Stay as warm as you can and be safe. We will get through this.”

Oncor shared these tips for staying warm inside your house if the power goes out.
