The event, which is 6 a.m. to midnight Sept. 23, is the largest community-wide giving event in the United States and is meant to support and raise awareness for local nonprofits. It was created in 2009 as an online tool to help people identify and support organizations making positive changes in the community.

“Honestly, CFT never dreamed it would turn into literally this community building and supporting movement 12 years later,” said Kaitlin Guthrow, the director of sponsorships and nonprofit relations at CFT. “No idea. It’s just grown exponentially.”

Last year, $58.8 million was raised for North Texas organizations. More than $375 million has been donated since the event started.

Amazon is the title sponsor of the event and has been promoting it since June. Delivery trucks and drivers’ shirts have been tagged with the North Texas Giving Day logo. The company has also worked with CFT and elected officials to surprise nonprofits each month, thanking them for their work with a gift basket.

Not all of the nonprofits participating in the giving day are asking for donations. Some are hoping to raise awareness or recruit volunteers.

Neighbors can participate by using the online tool to search for a nonprofit based on criteria — cause, county of service and leadership, for example. Early giving begins Sept. 1.

There’s also a way to help that doesn’t involve financial donations. CFT has created templates nonprofits and neighbors can share on social media and via email to help nonprofits reach their fundraising goals.
