Council will consider purchasing the former University General Hospital—Dallas at 2929 S. Hampton Road during its regular meeting Wednesday.

The property would be used for “affordable and supportive housing, homeless services and medical facilities.” It comprises 533,739 square feet, or roughly 12 acres.

Mayor Pro-Tem Chad West declined to comment on the proposal until after the City Council meeting, so all we know is what’s in the proposed resolution. See below.

Houston-based UGH purchased the hospital in 2012 and closed it in 2015.

It has an infamous past as a setting for torturous surgeries performed by Christopher Duntsch, aka Dr. Death, when it was known as South Hampton Community Hospital.

The old hospital is adjacent to the Hampton Illinois Library as well as the Nolen Grand senior living apartments.
