If you have extra breastmilk in your freezer, consider donating it to help fragile babies during an event Friday (May 6) at Methodist Hospital in Oak Cliff.

Mothers of premature infants often struggle to produce adequate breastmilk for a variety of reasons, according to the Mother’s Milk Bank of North Texas.

“For these families, donor human milk is a welcomed gift during one of the most stressful times of their lives,” organizers say. “Donating to a nonprofit milk bank ensures that fragile babies in our community receive safe, optimal nutrition with immunological protection.”

Each year, 700 to 1,000 mothers in North Texas donate their extra breastmilk through this program, they say.

The North Texas Milk Bank has participated in multiple research studies to help medical professionals and parents better understand the “complexities and mysteries” of breastmilk, which you can have a look at here.

The milk drive at Methodist will take place this coming Friday from 10-2 at 1441 N Beckley. You can pre screen online here and schedule a time slot to receive a free five-minute blood test and drop off your donation.

According to the organizers, “Much like blood drives, a milk drive provides a safe and convenient place to drop off extra frozen breastmilk.”
