Maybe you’ve seen the posters around Bishop Arts — there’s An Oak Cliff Movie Event coming to the Texas Theatre this weekend.

It’s the first feature film from Raw Lemon, an Oak Cliff-based indie group that includes filmmaker Eric Sosa, who tells us that three years ago he and his friends emptied their life savings to follow their dreams and make a movie.

The movie, We Start a Series, is about a group of aspiring filmmakers who start a YouTube channel and embark on a series of outrageous misadventures, hoping to make a name for themselves. They try everything from starting a porno, to fighting demons, to starting a gang, and this leads to the worst year of their young lives.

“We are from Oak Cliff. We put our hearts into making this film, and we’re just hoping to bring a night of laughs to our city,” Sosa says. “Oak Cliff is where our heart is, and we’re so excited to show our film to our neighborhood. This feels like our last big swing to get our name out as filmmakers.”

The trailer is hilarious.

But as backup — to make sure the screening is well attended — the Raw Lemon gang purchased three kegs of beer, which will be available to all ticket holders.

“We Start a Series” is showing at 7 p.m. July 17. Doors open at 6. And tickets are just $10, so order yours here.
