A 53-year-old man died in Oak Cliff Wednesday after the Dallas Police Department’s S.W.A.T. team deployed tear gas into a home where he was hiding.

The DPD Auto Theft and Gang Unit responded to 221 Starr Street in response to a stolen-vehicle investigation and found two vehicles being sold for parts in the backyard, according to a DPD blog post.

When officers knocked, someone locked the door, the post states. S.W.A.T. was called, and an arrest warrant was obtained.

Police got everyone else out of the building and were told that their suspect, Pablo Ramos, was in the attic.

“After a few hours of trying to make contact with the suspect, asking him to come out of the attic and surrender with no response, S.W.A.T. deployed gas into the house,” the post states.

A hole was cut into the roof, and Ramos was found unresponsive. He died later at the hospital.

DPD’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating. The Dallas District Attorney’s office also is investigating independently of that.
