A heat map published by the Dallas Police Department shows city council districts colored by total crime amounts. The more reported crimes in a district, the more red the district is colored.

A DPD dashboard that publishes crime data shows that citywide, reported crime incidents are down 3.09% from this time last year. The Advocate took a look at that data in order to make sense of how that number has played out in our neighborhood so far this year.

The data is sorted by city council district, but it is also possible to filter the data through police division (Oak Cliff makes up the Southwest division.)

Crime has fallen 15.53% in District 1 and 1.28% in District 4. District 3 has seen a 2.13% rise from numbers reported this time in 2022.

District 1 has seen the largest drop in crime out of all 14 city council districts. A 13.7% drop in District 10 takes second place.

While March showed a spike in homicides in Dallas, other violent crimes have seen a decrease in our neighborhood.

So far in 2023, simple assault is the most prevalent crime in Dallas. Reports of assault have fallen 9.34%  in District 1 and 4.91% in District 4 from this time last year. District 3 has seen a 3.65% raise in reported assault.

District 1 has seen a 25.76% drop in drug and narcotic violations and a 39.62% drop in robbery (averaged from incidents related to individuals and incidents related to businesses.)

In District 4, homicide has fallen 18.18% and motor vehicle theft — the second most prevalent crime citywide — has decreased by 7.59%.

Robbery, arson and burglary and breaking and entering have all fallen from last year’s numbers in District 3, dropping 15.56%, 78.57% and 31.58%, respectively.

On the rise in District 1 are reports of stolen property, which has increased 81.8%; sex offenses have risen 12.5% and kidnapping has risen 100%.

By this time in 2022, three instances of kidnapping had been reported in District 1. So far this year there have been six.

The Dallas Police Department displays total numbers of crimes reported in each city council district.

Weapon law violations have risen by 21.93% in District 4 so far this year. Drug and narcotic violations are up 31.69% and robbery has increased by 3.85%.

Weapon law violations have also increased in District 3, rising 55%. Drug and narcotic violations have risen 58.26%, and homicide offenses have risen 175% from four offenses in 2022 to 11 in 2023.

District 1 has the third least amount of reported crimes by district so far in 2023, with 1,430. (District 9 is a close fourth place, with a reported 1,436 crimes.)

District 3 has the eighth most crimes reported this year with 1,825, and with 2,152, District 4 has the sixth most.
