In the competition, each student has to defend their work to a juror and describe their artist statement, as well as elements and design principles of the work which contribute to a final score.

Three student’s works were nominated to advance to the state competition in San Marcos, Texas.

The students who are advancing are a sophomore and two freshman, respectively.

“Art has really helped our students find their own identity, and has helped them express their emotions,” visual art teacher Miriam Montaño Perez told DISD. “As they’re working through their art work, they visualize what they’re feeling and it helps them better understand themselves. Art plays this role for a lot of students.”
