Few things are spookier than a cemetery, but this Saturday’s Western Heights Cemetery fundraiser is sure to get you kicked into full Halloween gear.

The fundraiser will take place from 5-8 p.m. Oct. 28 at the White Rhino Coffee Roastery located next-door to the cemetery.

“When we started seeing how the cemetery is in such disrepair that’s when it was like let’s do a fundraiser, this is ridiculous,” Louise Herfel, member of the Fort Worth Avenue Development Group, told the Advocate earlier this year. “It’s kind of mushroomed into we’re gonna go ahead and try to take care of it as much as we can and bring it to a level of glory that I don’t think it’s ever seen.”

For a suggested donation of $30, the fundraiser will include a cemetery tour, an opportunity to find unmarked graves using dowsing rods, tombstone symbolism information sessions, a coffee tasting, beer, wine and food.

An update will also be given on the status of moving Bonnie Parker’s gravesite to the cemetery near Clyde Barrow’s.

The first $5,000 raised at the fundraiser will be matched by a grant from the Constellation of Living Memorials. Funds from the event will be used to “give this historic property the attention that it deserves.”
