Funeral services for Texas political legend Eddie Bernice Johnson will be held at Concord Church in Red Bird on Jan. 9.

Johnson died on Dec. 31 at age 88.

The first Black woman to be elected to public office in Dallas, Johnson was elected to the Texas House in 1972, and represented Texas’ 30th Congressional District, which includes South Dallas and the Southern neighborhoods of Oak Cliff, from 1993 to 2023.

Opportunities for loved ones and constituents to honor Johnson will take place throughout the state from Jan. 8 – 10.

On Jan. 8, a viewing for Johnson will be held at the Hall of State in Fair Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A wake service will be held at Concord Church that evening, from 6:30 – 8 p.m.

Funeral services will begin at the church at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 9, and Johnson will be buried on Jan. 10 at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin.

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson instructed city offices to fly flags at half mast through Jan. 5 in honor of Johnson.

“I am stunned and saddened to learn of the passing of my dear friend, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson. Congresswoman Johnson was a groundbreaking leader for this country and for our state and city, and there really are no words to express my profound sense of grief and loss at the passing of this legendary American,” Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson wrote on X Sunday.
