Camryn Herriage, Sara House and four other friends were in a vehicle waiting at the stoplight at Beckley Avenue on the Margret Hunt Hill Bridge when they were struck by a Ford pickup truck, according to police. The crash caused a pile up.

According to witnesses, a woman who “appeared to be extremely intoxicated” was seen fleeing the scene. Dallas Police later arrested 27-year-old Carmen Guerrero who faces five charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one count of collision involving death, five counts of collision involving serious bodily injury and one count of manslaughter.

Guerrero, who was identified by police through a wallet found in the crashed vehicle, remains in Dallas County Jail on a $575,000 bond.

Herriage and four others were taken to a local hospital following the crash, which took place only two blocks from Herriage’s apartment, Fox4 reports.

22-year-old House, Herriage’s college roommate and friend, was killed in the accident, according to family members.

“Sara was known for her compassionate nature and her unwavering desire to make everyone around her happy. Her kindness and caring demeanor touched the lives of many, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew her,” a fundraiser for funeral costs reads.

A GoFundMe started to raise money for Herriage’s hospital bills said the recent Texas Tech University graduate suffered over 20 breaks in her body, brain swelling and bleeding and a torn aorta, amongst other complications. Doctors expect a recovery period of at least two years, the page says.

Herriage’s sister, Casie Campanello, told Fox4 that the accident resulted from a “careless act.” A social media post by family said Herriage is making “positive developments,” while remaining in the ICU.

“(It) put us in a situation that changed all of our lives,” she said. “We are very helpless and just stay strong for her, but it’s very difficult to see.”
