While some chose to celebrate the April 8 total solar eclipse with a toast of champagne or a watch party with loved ones, a group of Bishop Arts yogis took to their mats.

Jungle Fitness Studio hosted an outdoor yoga class and sound bath on the corner of Melba and Bishop today, timing the 75-minute session to coincide with the eclipse.

Cara Carlton, assistant manager of Jungle, said the class was an opportunity for members of the community to come together, reflect and meditate.

“We’re connecting not just with out bodies but with the world,” Carlton said. “What a rare thing.”

Earlier in the morning, when the sky was overcast, Carlton said she was hoping the weather would turn “sunny and beautiful” in time for the eclipse. As totality approached, each participant was given a pair of glasses while an instructor played soothing, meditative noises.

One attendee of the class, Amy Lara, said she felt the experience was a “celebration of energy” coming together in one space. After the eclipse, she was left feeling “of a soundful mind.”

“One of the messages (of the class) was to just let go,” Lara said. “When I saw it at full totality, I felt totally tranquil.”
