The SMU football team has been a surprise as one of the ACC’s best this season, and a main reason for its success has been the breakout of quarterback Kevin Jennings, an Oak Cliff native who attended South Oak Cliff High School.
Jennings is a first-year starter and was thrust into the role in place of Preston Stone during the early parts of the season, transforming the Mustangs offense. Stone was the starter for the 2023 season, and the first three games of this season.
Jennings was one of the best high school players in the state of Texas as a senior, leading SOC to the 2021 5A Division II state championship and being named the District 6-5A MVP after throwing for 3,028 yards with 39 touchdowns to three interceptions in his final season.
This season, Jennings has tallied 3,050 yards with 22 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
SMU finished out the regular season ranked No. 10 in the CFP rankings and slid into the playoffs over Alabama. The Mustangs will face No. 6 Penn State at noon on Saturday Dec. 21.
