Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support — a trusted resource providing safety, shelter and support for women and children experiencing domestic abuse for 40 years — has appointed Valéry “Val” Jean-Bart as executive director of Genesis at South Oak Cliff, marking a powerful new chapter for the organization’s expansion into a community with one of the highest rates of domestic violence in Dallas.

Jean-Bart, a beloved Dallas entrepreneur and founder of the acclaimed Val’s Cheesecakes, brings a deeply personal connection and decades of purpose-driven leadership to his new role. Known for his slogan “Cheesecake, Community, Repeat,” Jean-Bart has long used his business as a vehicle for connection and giving back, including regular cheesecake donations to Genesis Women’s Shelter.

“Genesis was always close to my mom’s heart since she was a survivor of domestic abuse. Before she passed, we had a habit of visiting the Genesis Benefit Thrift Store to donate items every Saturday as a way to give back,” said Jean-Bart. “To now step into this role as executive director of Genesis at South Oak Cliff is not just an honor; it’s a full-circle moment. This community shaped me, and I’m committed to showing up for it in every way I can.”

Growing up in Haiti, Jean-Bart recalls witnessing the financial abuse his mother endured from her partner that limited her safety and freedom. It’s a reminder that not all domestic abuse is physical – a critical fact that Genesis has been educating the community about to help victims identify what domestic abuse can look like. He says he’s hopeful his loyal cheesecake followers and fellow community members will take Genesis’s mission to heart and explore ways to support the organization, from donating items for clients in South Oak Cliff to volunteering to serving on auxiliary boards.

“Val’s story is the embodiment of what Genesis stands for — healing, hope, and transformation,” said Jan Langbein, CEO of Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support. “As we deepen our roots in South Oak Cliff, a community that has long faced systemic barriers to safety and support, Val’s leadership, lived experience, and deep roots in the area will be instrumental in building trust and creating lasting impact.”
