Last Wednesday, the City Council passed an item that is a grant application to the TxDOT Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside program for the Wright Street Trail.

The $5.9 million project would create a new nearly 2-mile pedestrian and bike trail along Wright Street between Edgefield Dr. and Illinois Ave., connecting neighborhoods for pedestrians, cyclists, and DART users. Currently, there is no sidewalk for most of this roadway, putting pedestrians and cyclists directly in conflict with cars.

With the approval, the City will submit the grant application by June 20th, and there is an anticipated award date of October 2025 from TxDOT to know if they have been selected. If successful, the funds will become available in fall 2026 and then the design work would begin.

“The City Council has approved an application for TxDOT Transportation Alternatives funds to develop a new shared-use pedestrian and bike path along Wright Street, between South Edgefield and West Illinois Avenue,” District 1 Council Member Chad West. “This nearly two-mile route will connect three DART stations and multiple neighborhoods, providing residents with a safe, accessible option for walking and biking—while also creating a valuable new outdoor amenity. Currently, this stretch of road, which runs parallel to the DART Red Line, lacks even basic infrastructure like sidewalks. Instead of using our limited funds for piecemeal improvements, we’ve been strategic and patient in pursuing external funding to make meaningful, comprehensive upgrades to this corridor.”
