For nearly six weeks, the exhibition will highlight artwork by Austin-based artist Chantal Lesley, whose pieces reflect her experience being raised in four different cultures. She was born to German and Peruvian parents and grew up in the Rio Grande Valley, located right between the U.S. and Mexico. Her art delves into themes like identity, belonging and modern sociopolitical issues, the press release said.

As I Lay It All To Rest consists of 14 photos and one video, all surrounding the topic of grief and “the tension between holding on and letting go,” as Lesley phrases it on her website. The pieces represent some of her struggles as a first-generation American with multiple cultural identities.

The exhibition will run Aug. 2 – Sept. 12 at Oak Cliff Cultural Center. On opening night Saturday, Lesley will host an artist talk at 5:30 p.m., followed by a reception from 6-8 p.m. at the center. The event and exhibition are free for the public to attend, with no prior registration required.

Oak Cliff Cultural Center is located at 223 West Jefferson Blvd. Business hours are 12-6 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.
