Husband-and-wife duo Jesse Acosta and Alejandra Zendejas launched Pasos for Oak Cliff in 2020, according to the website. The footwear-focused organization aims to increase students’ confidence, school attendance, participation and performance by hosting annual sneaker festivals, where Dallas’ economically disadvantaged students can receive brand-new shoes. It has given away 4,500 pairs of sneakers to date and will provide 500 students with new shoes this year, a press release said.

“We believe something as simple as new shoes can empower a child to walk into the classroom feeling confident and ready to learn,” Acosta stated in the release.

Pasos events also help students in need by providing school supplies and resources such as free haircuts and health screenings.

This year’s sneaker festival is 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at Adamson High School. Although the application to receive shoes and school supplies has closed, Pasos for Oak Cliff is still accepting volunteers and monetary donations online. Families can also subscribe to stay up to date on Pasos’ future giveaways, programs and events.

Adamson High School is located at 309 East 9th St.
