The groundbreaking celebration took place with community members, city officials, and members of the Dallas Wings staff and team in attendance.

According to the project vision, The Dallas Wings Practice Facility is designed to set a new standard for women’s professional sports in Dallas.

CEO of the Dallas Wings Greg Bibb said that we are in the midst of a movement that women deserve the same opportunities as men and that the movement will be felt here in West Oak Cliff and across the entire City of Dallas.

“Our professional athletes will serve as role models not seen from a far on the television or social media platform, but in this community’s backyard right here in West Oak Cliff,” Bibb said. “Up close and personal, where the City can be inspired and remains to help the next generation realize what is possible with dreams, opportunity and hard work.”

A key theme throughout the event’s speeches included the importance of investment in West Oak Cliff.

Dallas City Manager Kimberly Tolbert said that the facility will be bigger than a brick and mortar, but that “it will truly be a hub for systematic change.”

“As North Oak Cliff’s council member I’ve heard the same request for years, all of District 1 deserves investment and attention,” District 1 council member Chad West said. “And today, we deliver. Today we celebrate a milestone for West Oak Cliff and for our city, the construction of the Dallas Wings Practice Facility. While this facility is not open to the public per se, it will spark further investment in this park and in West Oak Cliff.”

The Dallas Wings Practice Facility recently was confirmed for construction on part of Joey Georgusis Park earlier this month, following the passage of rezoning the space.

“More than 20 years ago Joey G. family did donate this land to the City of Dallas because he loved sports and recreation and that was his passion,” JR Huerta, vice chair of the Dallas Park and Recreation Board, said. “His dad said he loved being outside spending time. And now I’m hoping that our youth will take this and grow. That’s important to us as a community that we do that.”

During closing remarks, Tolbert said that today is a day of hope, along with committing that the City will deliver this practice facility by the spring of 2026.

Joey Georgusis Park is located at 1200 Stone Mesa Drive.
