For Oak Cliff founder Taylor Toynes said the Back to School Festival is where For Oak Cliff has its roots, and this celebration will be a way to look back on how the organization has grown over the last 10 years.

“It’s been a blessing to be able to do this for 10 years,” Toynes said. “We have an amazing group of volunteers that come out and support us and help distribute the backpacks.”

The organization’s mission is to liberate Oak Cliff from systemic oppression through a culture of education while increasing social mobility and social capital.

The Back To School Festival is a vessel to equip the community and students with the necessary supplies, resources, and service providers to have a successful school year.

“I think this supports the parents and kids in a huge way because it equips them with what’s necessary before the school year starts,” Toynes said. “When a kid is able to walk in with everything that they need on the first day of school, it’s really special. They know they’re equipped to learn and just have the essentials and not have to have to worry. And also thinking about the financial burden, it’s able to take that off of a parent or guardian for the child.”
