The fall semester is underway, and a local nonprofit is seeking volunteer mentors to help students at area high schools succeed academically and prepare for life after high school.
Journey Forward Mentoring partners with Molina, Sunset and Adamson High School, providing one-on-one mentoring for students.
The Program matches each student with a mentor who will help them best discover their potential and challenge them to think boldly about their future. Mentors meet with their mentees at least twice a month to navigate their educational options, explore higher education and different career paths, and improve their understanding of what information, resources, and opportunities exist to support their success.
“We have a very open and honest relationship,” Mentor Sabrina DeLeon said of her mentee. “As long as she shows up for herself I will be there to push her in whatever direction she needs. Some days it’s business only and others we just talk about her day and things that make her happy.”
The nonprofit was founded in 2014, and its executive director, Anjulie Ponce, is a former volunteer who lives in Oak Cliff.
