Following Banned Books Week, the Texas Theatre will be hosting a special screening of a documentary that focuses on those who are at the forefront of the regulation: librarians.
The Librarians, a film by Academy Award nominee and Peabody Award winner Kim Snyder, highlights librarians as the first responders in the fight for democracy and First Amendment rights.
The description of the film highlights how Texas State Rep. Matt Krause has a list of books that are needing to be pulled from the shelves, known as the Krause List, that includes 850 books that focus on race and LGBTQ+ stories.
Librarians connect the dots from heated school and library board meetings nationwide. In addition to threats, harassment and laws increasing the stress of the day to day, librarians’ rallying cry for freedom to read as a cautionary tale.
Following the screening, five individuals will join for a Q&A session including librarian Audrey Wilson-Youngblood and Texas Freedom to Read Project cofounder Laney Hawes. Tickets are available for the Tuesday, Oct. 14 showing at 7 p.m.
