LeAnn Lewis moved to Texas last year, and she recently bought a house in Oak Cliff. But already, she’s pulling the community together for a good cause.

Lewis is running the MetroPCS Dallas White Rock Marathon Sunday, and she’s doing it for Team In Training, which trains people for marathons, half marathons and triathlons and teaches them how to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

She set a goal of $350, but then she had the idea to ask Oak Cliff businesses for gift certificates and items she could auction off on her fundraising website. Eight businesses contributed, and Lewis wound up raising $1,000.

The donations included a three-month membership from Anytime Fitness, a poster from Cube Creative, a gift basket from Green Pet, a haircut from Alchemy Salon, a half-share of produce from Urban Acres, and gift certificates from Nova, Eno’s and Smoke.

This will be Lewis’s fourth marathon, but she hasn’t run one in about seven years. She is from California but most recently lived in France. And she works as a sixth-grade teacher in Grand Prairie.

“I’ve lived in a lot of major cities and four countries, so I’m pretty good at spotting neighborhoods that are creative and dynamic,” she says of Oak Cliff.
