The Oak Cliff Lion’s Club donated the lion, named Leo, to the park in 2004 as part of the club’s 75th anniversary.

“Leo the Lion, our longtime Oak Cliff Founders Park resident, was savagely vandalized last week,” City Councilman Scott Griggs said in a Facebook post.

Lynn Rushton with the Dallas office of cultural affairs had the paint removed. The bronze was scrubbed, cleaned and given a temporary coating. It still needs another treatment to remove the rest of the paint, plus a hot-wax treatment to protect the surface.

Here’s how it looked after initial cleaning.
