Adam Loew started the enterprise on a street corner, cooking and grilling at the corner of West Davis and Clinton for 14 months before he and wife, Thania, opened Grassroots Kitchen.

“We really tried hard to keep this roller coaster going,” Loew said on Facebook. “We just never were able to really make it profitable.”

The owners financed the buildout of their rented space on Edgefield Avenue, including a huge industrial kitchen. They’d had hopes of taking on large catering gigs and subleasing the kitchen to other food-and-beverage upstarts. But they also made all of their food from scratch, except for the bread.

The restaurant is closed today, and the Lowes haven’t said whether they have plans for a last hurrah.
