Oak Cliff-based artist Jose Vargas, who founded El Corazon art show in 1993, suffered a heart attack last week and is home recuperating.

“And some people think I have no heart!” Vargas wrote in an email over the weekend.

Vargas says he was treated at the Dallas VA Medical Center in Oak Cliff and was lucky to survive.

“They performed a procedure on my heart and sent me on my way home with lots of meds and recommendations for a change in my diet. That is correct – I need to cut back on my taco intake!” he wrote.

Vargas says he already feels better than he did before the heart attack and hopes to be up and about in a few weeks.
