The library will host Mavericks player #7 Dwight Powell for a reading event to promote the Mavs Reading Challenge.

The event will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the library auditorium and does not require registration.

The Mavs reading challenge is an annual competition for kids K-12, and encourages students to read for 20 minutes a day for 40 days. The 2023 challenge is running now through March 31.

According to the Dallas Mavericks, the challenge is in partnership with Whataburger and all kids who complete the reading challenge are eligible for prizes.

The top 20 students will receive tickets to a Mavs game, and the top 2 students will receive a Mavs Mascot classroom visit.

Students will be able to meet Powell at Thursday’s event. Powell has been an ambassador for the reading challenge for several years.

“The more you read, the easier it is to read and the more fun it is to read. And then you start to read things that are more challenging and expand your mind more. You can start to investigate more things that you’re curious about,” Powell told DISD students during a 2022 reading challenge event.
