To others, coffee is art.

If you fall into the later category, this weekend’s U.S. Coffee Championship Prelims competition at the White Rhino Coffee Roastery on Fort Worth Avenue might be the competition for you. As one of 13 locations nationwide hosting a prelim event, the competition will welcome “talented coffee professionals” for cup taster and latte art competitions on Oct. 14 and 15.

The event will be free to attend for members of the public, although White Rhino has asked spectators RSVP ahead of time.

According to the U.S. Coffee Championships governing body, each preliminary competition will host between three and 24 competitors with the top three competitors advancing to the Coffee Champs Qualifying Competitions.

And if you’re wondering how something as ubiquitous as coffee could be judged, the U.S. Coffee Championship has a 27 page document outlining the preliminary competition rounds standards, formatting and judging criteria.

Four judges serving three roles will be present at the prelim, with two judging presentation, one assessing the barista technique and one overseeing the competitions flow.
