The Elmwood location of Peaberry Coffee celebrated its final day of business Wednesday, shuttering after only five months due to the economy.

Owner Elijah Salazar described the conditions of the economy as “so rough,” making it difficult for the store to succeed.

“This way we can make sure that the Kiestwood shop survives,” Salazar told the Advocate. “I didn’t want to lose my first baby.”

Opening the Elmwood coffee shop was initially delayed because of permitting confusion, Salazar said. Issues with parking requirements, certificates of occupancy and permitting slowed down the anticipated opening.

“I know my little business doesn’t compare to some of these giant companies in Dallas,” he told the Advocate in October. “But we get forgotten about because we’re smaller and it feels like we don’t matter as much.”

For now, Salazar said Peaberry Coffee’s original Kiestwood location is open seven days a week with normal hours. The company plans to “refocus their efforts” on the canning business.

Salazar has also pulled out of the anticipated Elmwood smashburger shop Herby’s in order to focus on Peaberry. Herby’s still plans to open with other partners, he said.
