Representatives from Alamo Manhattan are interested in installing a city-funded memorial near the Bishop Arts streetcar stop. The Developer owns a sliver of Zang Boulevard following the 2022 city council vote to abandon the 2,500 feet of property.

In a recent newsletter, city council member Chad West said he plans to pull together a Statute Exploratory Work Group that will help spearhead the selection of the historical figure chosen.

The group will research historical figures from Oak Cliff or who have had a significant impact on Oak Cliff, pulling together between five and 10 recommendations for the statue. The group will also create a scoring matrix and facility community input surveys, West said.

It is not clear when the city will have funding available for the statue, but West said he anticipates work group meetings will last between eight and nine months.

Those interested in volunteering for the work group can email ashley.long@dallas.gov.

The statue will be a late edition to the $1.5-million streetcar plaza being installed by Alamo Manhattan.

Currently being built is the four-story mixed use space in the former Ten Bells Tavern lot. The project includes 210 apartments and 9,700 square feet of ground-floor retail built over an underground parking garage, according to Alamo Manhattan’s website.
