Trustees are expected to vote on the namings of several schools in their March 21 school board meeting. A proposal form for the renaming shows representatives of a site-based decision making committee, the campus PTA and Dallas ISD have all signed off on the proposal.

Domingo Garcia is a former state representative and National President for the League of United Latin American Citizens, while Dr. Elba Garcia represented District 1 on the city council for eight years and is now a Dallas County Commissioner.

“Dr. Garcia was instrumental in steering a number of important public projects to completion, including securing critical funds for the Latino Cultural Center and spearheading the development of a new Animal Shelter and the Oak Cliff Cultural Center,” the proposal reads. “When she was chosen unanimously by her colleagues to serve as Deputy Mayor Pro Tem and Mayor Pro Tem, she was the first Latina to serve in those positions.”

The proposal continues: “(Domingo Garcia’s) tireless efforts to bridge cultural and socioeconomic gaps have earned him recognition and respect in the Dallas area and across the nation. Domingo Garcia’s leadership has left an indelible mark on Dallas, making him a beloved figure known for his unwavering commitment to justice and equality.”
